Physically, the Hall of Distinction is a long,
T-shaped hallway on the second floor of the Sandford Fleming Building.
It overlooks the Atrium on the west side, and fronts the Engineering Library
on the east. It is not a rarely visited shrine, but is an active and vital place.
During the school term, intermittent floods of undergraduates, and a more
uniform flux of graduate students and staff visit the presentations.
The Hall is lined with glass cases, each displaying on a permanent plate an
artist's portrait of a Member, together with a citation of specific achievements.
A large separate board displays the full Roll of Membership. The Hall is a
familiar presence in the lives of the students and is often visited by alumni
and their families.
There is, of course, a second Hall, which is of the spirit, and not at all
dependent on a physical manifestation. It is more nearly an expression of
the "Spirit of Skule" itself. This Hall is the assembly of distinguished alumni,
selected for membership by their peers after or near the ends of their careers on
the basis of their lifelong accomplishments. These are graduates whose performances,
as they followed a wide variety of career paths, have ultimately defined what is most
exemplary in our graduates and in our profession. They provide role models for our
undergraduates about to address the ever greater challenges of a changing world.
The careers of the Members stand as examples, and add a sense of reality to the
aspirations of successive generations of engineering students. The Members do
indeed form a distinguished company, and through their membership their achievements
are perpetuated, giving them new meaning and lasting value.
