Current Research
A large part of my work involves the collection of human umbilical cords from
scheduled cesarian births at the Sunnybrook and Women's College Health Sciences
Centre, after obtaining written consent from the patients. The collected cords
are transported back to the lab and processed according to protocols developed
in our lab to obtain the cells of interest, namely human umbilical cord perivascular
cells (HUCPVs). These cells are either frozen down for future use or cultured
immediately in various assays to study, for instance, their potential for
differentiating into different tissue lineages under defined culture conditions.
I assist grad students whose work involves the use of HUCPVs. I perform serum
screens when required as the proliferating and differentiating abilities of these
cells are highly dependent on the serum lot. I perform techniques such as flow
cytometry, PCR and immunocytochemistry staining. I am also trained as a phlebotomist.
